Job Description:Interaction Designer Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks a creative & talented interaction designer to help invent the future of electric power. We develop critical products that provide the main interface for protecting, controlling, monitoring & analyzing the power grid. As an interaction designer, you will play a key role in our business by inventing innovative ways to display & interact with the power system via software. A user centered design philosophy is essential to meeting the unique needs of our users. As a member of the UI/UX Development group, you will find yourself working alongside Visual Designers, User Researchers & Front-End developers. Your flexibility and willingness to assist where needed, learn a variety of new skills, and work on multiple projects simultaneously is crucial. The ideal candidate will be passionate about interaction design, have experience designing User interfaces, be expert and detailed in their craft and champion the user s needs in all cases. They will be adept at transforming complex tasks into intuitive workflows, converting complex information into accessible & rich data visualization, taming complex systems with elegant information architecture, and inventing new ways to perceive, predict & interact with the electric power grid. Responsibilities: Help to design user interfaces for new and existing SEL software products and features. Design user interface layout wireframes, sketches, low fidelity mocks Design information architecture Design software navigation Design data visualization Develop high level storyboards, mockups & prototypes to effectively communicate interaction design concepts. Champion a user centered design process Work closely with user experience researchers to understand customer needs and goals Convert user goals and workflows into software interaction design concepts Generate interactive prototypes to communicate and test design ideas Participate with the design, execution & analysis of usability tests. Make constructive suggestions for improvements Other user centered design practices as assigned Assist User researchers and Front-End developers where needed Keep current with industry trends, methodologies, and techniques for visual/graphic design, and user experience as it relates to interaction design Qualifications: BA/BS degree in Design (e.g. interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), HCI, CS, or a related field or equivalent practical experience. 2+ years demonstrable experience designing user interfaces for web, mobile, and/or desktop applications Demonstrable grasp of interaction design principles (including affordances and responsiveness) Experience with Adobe products, specifically Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop (or equivalent software) Experience creating interactive prototypes using one or more of the following technologies: paper, power point/keynote, HTML + JS, programming Works well in a team environment, able to collaborate, critique, receive critique, and clearly/creatively communicate design rationale Demonstrates a methodical design approach, strong clean visual design sense Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills Must have a strong work ethic and commitment to quality Background check results satisfactory to SEL Negative drug test result(s) Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrable experience with modern HTML5 and CSS3 web design patterns, including mobile and responsive websites (provide URLs). Demonstrable experience with one or more modern programming languages Experience working with user experience researchers, other designers & engineers Good team working skills - comfortable collaborating, mentoring, critiquing, and assisting other interaction designers and front end developers.
