Cobham's CNI and Interconnect Solutions factory (CNI & I),located in Exeter NH, is a leading supplier of Radio Frequency (RF)Interconnect Solutions to enhance the overall performance ofcommunication systems by improving reliability of transmission andreception. Cobham offers solutions for commercial and militaryapplications including flat plate slotted array antennas, rotaryjoints to allow full rotation or scanning of antennas, motioncontrol and positioner/gimbal assemblies, and passive and coaxialcable assemblies. Cobham is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to participate in thedesign, develop, and test of complex and precise mechanical andelectro-mechanical components for extreme environments. ThisSenior Mechanical Engineer will apply strong knowledge ofengineering principles to design products such as motors, actuators,slip rings, instruments, controls, and mechanisms. This position reports to and works closely with Senior Engineers andprovides guidance and direction to mechanical designers, assemblers,and technicians as well as working individually on certainprojects. The Senior Mechanical Engineer must effectivelyinterface with peers, other departments, suppliers, and customers asneeded to support successful execution of projects and companyobjectives in a timely manner. A wide range of creativity andself-direction is expected.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead Design & Development Projects. Participate in the NPI( New Product Introduction ) Process. Responsible for achievement of technical, schedule, and costrequirements. Direct and supervise the work of other engineers, designers,and support personnel as assigned. Take ownership and responsibility for the product designthrough the entire product life cycle.Conduct Product Design & Development. Interpret systemspecifications and reduce to mechanical and electro-mechanicaldesign requirements. Create conceptual designs, assess risks, conduct design tradestudies, and develop cost effective and reliable designs thatmeet the program requirements, including demanding spaceenvironmental requirements.Perform Planning and Reporting. Formulate a design plan or work from technical objectives andoverall schedules as specified by senior project staff. As Principal Project Engineer, responsible for achievement ofschedule, fiscal and performance objectives on large to moderatesize projects. Report technical and schedule progress at program reviews andinternal/customer design reviews as required. Coordinate work activities with other groups.Perform Trade Studies. Solve problems requiring a broadknowledge of thermal, structural, and/or aerodynamic principles.Develop comprehensive trade-studies and technicalpresentations that are reviewed by both senior program staff andexternal customers.Direct Fabrication and Test of Hardware. Develop test plansand test procedures and direct the fabrication of fixtures,prototypes, and flight hardware. Conduct or direct sub-system and product-level mechanical andelectro-mechanical testing to validate compliance to systemrequirements. Ensure manufacturability and reliability of designs.Assure Complete Product Life Cycle Documentation. Performdocumentation of the design with the support of design/draftingand manufacturing engineering. Conduct tolerance stack-up analyses and assure thattolerancing is documented correctly. Write or contribute to travellers and other work instructionsas required. Participate in Root Cause Corrective Action investigations anddocument analyses and findings for presentations to internal andcustomer Failure Review Boards. Assure that corrective actions are properly implemented. Incorporate continuous improvements during product lifecycle. Support Proposal Development. Participate in the preparation of technical proposals. Use experience to baseline conceptual designs during theproposal effort.Perform Other Duties. Assignments may include research and development of newtechniques and materials as a result of independent study. Perform other duties and accept responsibilities as required.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, SystemsEngineering or other related technical degree Direct involvement in space or aerospace, military orautomotive related engineering activitiesMinimum of five (5) years work experience in the designof mechanical and/or electro-mechanical productsMust be familiar with motion control concepts, practices, andproceduresMust have extensive knowledge of materials, manufacturing, andtesting practices and processesStrong proficiency in PTC CREO, Solidworks or similar CADplatformsExperience with preparing and presenting technical reports anddesign reviews requiredExperience with Microsoft Office tools requiredPREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: Prior experience with PTC CREO Simulate, ANSYS, and/or NASTRANFinite Element Analysis tools is preferredExperience participating in proposal generation preferredExperience interfacing directly with customers preferredSecurity: All applicants must be a U.S Citizen or U.S Person as defined byITAR (a lawful permanent resident or someone who is a protectedindividual as defined by 8 U.S.C.1324b(a)(3)).
